If you are teaching 5th Grade, you will begin the first three weeks of schools with a Social Studies Overview. The Social Studies Overview introduces students to four of the five big ideas in social studies: Government and Civics, Culture and Societies, Geography, and Historical Perspective. (Note: The big idea of economics is integrated throughout the curriculum.)
It is important to develop learning targets using content standards. These targets are the focus of the lesson. Assessments used should reflect the targets developed for the lesson.
Learning Target examples are:
I can identify physical characteristics of a location using a map.
I can describe how the colonists felt during the Boston Tea Party.
I can explain how to work in a group in my classroom, home and community.
